What Cost A Salad Sandwich?
For dinner tonight we decided on something simple: Salad sandwiches for three of us. However, we needed more bread and frankly had none of the needed ingredients. So, a trip to the supermarket was in order. As we drove there and started to think about how much the ingredients would cost, the thought crossed our minds that the ingredients were quite expensive and a simple salad sandwich was quite cheap to buy at Subway where I knew you could get a 'Veggie Delite' sandwich (6 inches) for around $3.70.
So we decided on a little experiment: We would go into the supermarket and first check out the prices of the ingredients. If we needed a budget of more than $10 to buy the lot, we would go to Subway instead. The supermarket was Publix - one of a number located in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Here is what we found out:
A fresh baguette cost $2.29. The cheapest lettuce we could find was $1.49. Tomatoes on the vine were $1.99 per pound and we decided we'd need a couple which weighed a pound. We wanted a special addition specifically mushrooms and these were $1.99 per pack. For a single large onion the cost was 99 cents. Finally we headed to the cheese section where the best deal we could get was was $2.49 for a supermarket-brand 80z cut of cheese. The total for these ingredients was therefore over $11 and then tax would have to be added.
It didn't take us long to decide to scrap the idea of buying from the supermarket in order to make our own salad sandwiches and to go instead to Subway where for some reason our total came to a little over $8 though in reality the cost of a Veggie Delite sandwich is $3.75. What puzzles me though is how come now a 'fast food' chain can feed us cheaper than we can feed ourselves? Something is surely wrong with supermarket pricing?
